Night Life of 1920's
This website relates to the essential question of how movements in fashion and women impacted the greater society by talking about the overall social changes during the 20's. During prohibition, when alcohol was illegal, speakeasies were created as a place where people could go and consume alcohol without getting caught by the authorities. This lead to a change in society because it led to the formation of gangs. Gangsters controlled the underground bootlegging businesses and controlled the major cities by evading the authorities and providing the booze for the night clubs. Everyone went to the speakeasies to drink liquor and party. Flappers became prominent figures during this time by changing the social roles for women. By smoking, drinking, and using slang, the flappers tried to change to gender roles that all women should be at home. Flappers went to speakeasies and became more scandalous in attempts to have the women ideals as more independent and daring. This had an impact on the social roles for women in America. Jazz music became a popular style of music during this time and this lead to changes in how some African Americans were viewed, it was mostly African Americans who began the Jazz Era. Jazz also, further, led to social changes for women because women began to dance at speakeasies. Previously, women would not have danced in the styles that they would to jazz music. The Charleston, names from Charleston, South Carolina, became a popular dance move for women and men during this time. Jazz helped lead to social changes in all women and men.
The subtopics of Speakeasies, Flappers, and Jazz all fit under the social life that really boomed in the cities at night. The night life was filled with social changes and efforts to improve gender roles and equality in sociability.
