The Jazz Era
Beginning of Jazz
The most popular style of music entertainment in the 1920's- Jazz. Influenced by a previous style of music and dance called Ragtime, Jazz was a style that was first founded by the African Americans as expressions of their personalities and sociability. In America, Jazz music first arrived in New Orleans, the city with a previously major slave trade port. African Americans would gather in the square of the city to play music and dance, which later transformed into the style of jazz. Jazz music had a strong emphasis on the individual voice and, for blacks, over coming racial differences.
After 1925, the central location of jazz music moved from it's home city, New Orleans, to the even larger city of Manhattan. New York became the place for jazz performances and recordings. Jazz music swept across America, carrying voices and social influences along with it.
